LAI601 Overview of International Communication

Course Description

The language of each country, region, or group of people not only communicates ideas and feelings, but also the elements of their culture. Agiven culture’s norms, values, beliefs, and assumptions are expressed through the various actions and behaviors of its peoples in addition to their language. Because these elements of culture are often assumed and inexplicit, there is opportunity for much conflict when different cultures clash. This first half of this course introduces learners to several paradigms through which cultural differences can be better understood. Through this framework students will then be guided to look at media literacy and conflict resolution/negotiation through the lens ofculture. Course content will be presented in multiple formats, and an active learning approach will be employed.

Course Goals

Explain high-context and low-context culture.

Explain the differences in social hierarchy, cultural attitudes towards hierarchy, and dispersal of power.

Be able to explain visual culture in historical, social and technical contexts.

Understand principal eclecticism, sensemaking, and attention to the audience.

Can think of culturally appropriate communication strategies.
