Freshman Seminar 1

Freshman Seminar 1 is an introductory course designed to support students in their transition to university life in Japan, particularly at Miyazaki International University (MIU). The course provides a balanced foundation in both academic skills and essential knowledge of Japanese culture, manners, and social rules.

Academic Skills and University Learning

International Students will learn how university learning differs from previous educational experiences, with a focus on:

  • Independent study
  • Critical thinking
  • Active participation
  • Personal responsibility

Students will also gain practical understanding of the MIU academic system, including:

  • Credits and GPA
  • Syllabus reading
  • Academic expectations
  • Effective learning strategies

Through active learning activities such as creative writing, paraphrasing, reflection writing, discussions, and presentations, students will develop communication and thinking skills necessary for academic success.

Japanese Culture and Daily Life

The course also introduces important aspects of Japanese culture, etiquette, and social expectations necessary for successful life in Japan. Topics include:

  • Punctuality
  • Communication style
  • Respect for shared spaces
  • Public behavior and manners
  • Academic and social responsibility

Students will explore how to live and study harmoniously in Japanese society while developing intercultural awareness and adaptability.
